Modem Troubleshooting

Q. What's the difference between X2, KFlex56 and V.90?
A. X2 and KFlex were the original 56K modem standards. Because they are non-compatible (i.e. a Kflex modem dialing into an X2 modem will only give 33.6 connects), V.90 was developed as a 56K modem standard.
Q. What standards does Chapline support?
A. Chapline.net uses the latest V.90 code from 3COM for all of our dial in modems. This means that we support V.90 and X2 dial in (as well as ISDN on all lines). Users with KFlex56 modems should consider upgrading their firmware and drivers to V.90 to get optimum performance.
Q. Windows reports my connect speed as 38400, 57600 or 115200—is this really my connection speed?
A. Probably not. Windows is reporting the DTE speed, which is the speed between the computer and your modem. What you want to measure is the DCE speed—which is the speed between your modem and our modems. The easiest way to measure a true connection speed is to use an FTP program (such as WS-FTP or CuteFTP) to download a file from one of our servers. The link below will allow you to download via a web browser a 500K file—you can watch the download status and read the connect speed from there (downloading via FTP is more accurate than with a browser, but, this will give you a good indication of your connection.

Q. Are all 56K modems created equal?
A. Unfortunately, no. In our experience, 3COM/US Robotics products offer the best reliability and performance. Any V.90 modem will work, but, you should make sure you are using the latest V.90 drivers and firmware as supplied by the manufacturer.
Q. Where can I get drivers and firmware info?
A. www.56k.com maintains a large listing of Firmware Updates for most modems - see the links at the bottom of this document for direct links. A word of caution—read all the warnings and readme files before attempting a firmware update—irreparable hardware to the modem can occur.
